Contributive Career: • A contributive career is one where the career-seeker is focused contributing, with rewards being a by-product of the contributions made.
Acquisitive Career: • It is one in which the career-seeker is focused on acquiring higher position higher salary, more benefits, etc. • This preoccupation with selfish interests often damages the individual’s career and equally important, damages the organization and society.
Exploring the Contributor’s Vision of Career: 1. JOB APPLICANT : Acquisitive vision of career: • Job Applicant chooses a job only based on the monetary rewards and material benefits it offers. Result – just because the money is good. Contributor vision of career: • Job Applicant chooses a job based on the opportunities it is likely to open up to them with their future development and career long run.
2. Technician Acquisitive vision of career: • This Non-contributor Technician is willing to work only in the specific domain in which he is trained. Contributor vision of career: • This Contributor Technician is willing to learn whatever is necessary, get help wherever needed, and do whatever it takes to serve the purpose in any job
3. Worker: Acquisitive vision of career: • This Non-contributor Worker wants to work only in areas one is comfortable in one may afraid of doing any new job and is not interested in doing anything beyond its specific job description. Contributor vision of career: • This Contributor Worker is always eager to try out new kinds of work and is interested to learn new skills and gain knowledge.
4. Executive: Acquisitive vision of career: • This Non-contributor Executive seeks to advance his career by getting more money, more power, more position. Contributive vision of career: • This Contributor Executive seeks to make wider and deeper contributions to the lives of more and more people, as his career advances.
How do create opportunities for growth in career? • Create a “growth opportunity” for self by serving customer well. • Create one more opportunity by whole heartedly accepting a challenge. • Create one more growth opportunity by not only succeeding in assignment, but also sharing credit and focusing on that role as a contributive-manager.
Career: • “career” does not mean begging for employment or seeking to be gainfully occupied.
