SAN MIGUEL BUSINESSES IN INDONESIA • BEER • NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES (SOFTDRINKS,MINERAL WATER) • PROCESSED MEATS • PACKAGING MATERIALS (PLASTIC PALLETS AND CRATES)
PROBLEM : ACCIDENTAL USE OF NONHALAL MEAT • MAIN RAW MATERIAL FOR PROCESSED MEATS IN INDONESIA IS BEEF IMPORTED FROM NEW ZEALAND AND AUSTRALIA. • IMPORTED BEEF FROM THESE TWO COUNTRIES ARE HALAL-ACCREDITED. • IN 2007, A SUPERVISOR DISCOVERED MEAT CARTONS BEARING THE SIGN “NONHALAL”. • ALL PRODUCTION IMMEDIATELY STOPPED, ALL FINISHED PRODUCTS AND WORK IN PROCESS MATERIALS SEGREGATED • MUI ALERTED; HALAL AUDITORS DISPATCHED TO PLANT • CONTAMINATED PRODUCTS AND NONHALAL RAW MATERIALS DESTROYED • SUPPLIER BLACKLISTED, INSPECTED AND RE-ACCREDITED
HOW AN INDONESIAN COMPANY CAN PRODUCE BOTH HALAL AND NONHALAL PRODUCTS (PT SOEJASCH IN BALI) • PT SOEJASCH PRODUCES HALAL PROCESSED MEATS UNDER THE BRAND “NIKMAT” AND NONHALAL PROCESSED MEATS UNDER THE BRAND “MAMA’S” • IT HAS A FACTORY IN BALI • THE FACTORY COMPOUND IS DIVIDED INTO TWO COMPLETELY INDEPENDENT PLANTS, ONE FOR HALAL AND THE OTHER FOR NONHALAL • DELIVERY OF NONHALAL PRODUCTS ARE DONE USING DEDICATED TRUCKS; NO CO-LOADING WITH HALAL PRODUCTS. • STORAGE OF NONHALAL PRODUCTS IS ALSO SEPARATE FROM THE HALAL PRODUCTS
CONCLUSIONS • TO MUSLIMS, THE ISSUE OF HALAL IS VERY SERIOUS • IN A MUSLIM COUNTRY, HALAL ACCREDITATION IS A MUST • HALAL ACCREDITATION CAN BE BURDENSOME BUT THE INDONESIAN HALAL ACCREDITATION BODY IS UNDERSTANDING AND PRACTICAL.
