  4. Jonathan Edwards 1703- 1758 “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”

  5. Jonathan Edwards • He was born in 1703 in East Windsor, Connecticut. • He entered Yale College at age thirteen. • He was the 5 of 11 children, and his father was a Preacher. • In his life, he compared religions and researched religion in general.

Jonathan Edwards • At Yale, Edwards wrote almost exclusively on natural philosophy and metaphysics. • Insect • 11 years old, everything exists for a reason • Lightening • 17 years old, mesmerized by lightening, grace • In 1726, became the pastor of the church in Northampton, Massachusetts, the largest and most influential church outside of Boston.

  7. Jonathan Edwards • A preacher, theologian, and missionary to Native Americans. • He is often associated with: • his defense of Reformed theology • the metaphysics of theological determinism • the Puritan heritage.

  8. The Sermon • The Great Awakening • The revival of religious fervor that swept America. • Suddenly, people were denouncing their sins and dedicating themselves to God.

  9. The Sermon • He explained hell, and the people were terrified, and he aroused frenzy. • People were begging for mercy and protection.

  10. Displeased • Many members of the church were displeased with his negativity and his insistence on grace. • The church removed him as minister in 1750. • In 1757, he was elected president of Princeton University, but he died just after taking office from the effects of small pox.
