  1. The Mole Theory Percent Composition

  2. Your clothing labels have Percent Composition.

  3. Percent Composition molar mass of compound The percent by mass of each element in a compound You must do your ‘side work’ and find the molar mass of the compound before you can calculate the percent composition of its parts Use the formula to complete % mass = grams ofelement in 1 mol compound× 100

  4. Remember molar mass- I call this ‘Side Work’ – it is often not our main purpose, but we need it to finish the job • What is the gram formula mass of ammonium carbonate (NH4) 2CO3? • Take inventory: • N- 2 × 14g = 28g • H- 8 × 1g = 8g • C- 1 × 12g= 12g • O- 3 × 16g = 48g 96g (NH4)2CO3

  5. Calculating % Composition grams of (NH4)2CO3 grams of (NH4)2CO3 96 g (NH4)2CO3 • Calculate the % composition of (NH4)2CO3. • % N = mass of N × 100 = 28g N X 100 = 29.2% N 96g (NH4)2CO3 • % H = mass of H × 100 = 8g H × 100 = 8.3% H

  6. Calculating % Composition grams of (NH4)2CO3 96 g (NH4)2CO3 grams of (NH4)2CO3 96 g (NH4)2CO3 Check your work: 29.2 % N 8.2 % H 12.5 % C 50.0 % O _______ 99.9% (NH4)2CO3 Anything more than 1% off needs to be recalculated and checked again • % C = mass of C × 100 = 12g C X 100 = 12.5% C • % O = mass of O × 100 = 48g O × 100 = 50.0% O
