The Subject and Predicate • Sentences consist of two basic parts: subjects and predicates. • The subject is a word or word group that tells whom or what the sentence is about. • The predicate is a word or word group that tell something about the subject.
Sentence Order • Sentences can be ordered in many ways, but the most typical is subject followed by the predicate • Examples: • The students try hard in school. • All of the leaves fell off the tree. • The basketball court was filled with kids. Some Exceptions: • Far away from school drove the football team. • When did Joe get a new car?
Let’s Practice!!! • Identify the subject and predicate of each sentence: Hint: To identify the subject ask “who” or “what” before the verb. • The new student got lost on her first day. • Here is the homework that was missing. • There will be a meeting in the cafeteria after school. • Underneath the table, the pencil fell. • Why did Ariana eat the last piece of pizza?!
Simple Subject vs. Complete Subject • The simple subject may be a noun, a pronoun, or a word group that functions as a noun. Example: The view from the top of the mountain is amazing! • The complete subject consists of the simple subject and any word or word groups used to modify the simple subject. Example: The view from the top of the mountain is amazing!
Simple Predicate vs. Complete Predicate • The simple predicate may be a one-word verb or a verb phrase( a main verb with one or more helping verbs). Example: The victorious athletes were surrounded by their fans. • The complete predicate consists of the simple predicate and all of the words used to modify the simple predicate to complete its meaning. Example: The victorious athletes were surrounded by their fans.
The Compound Subject and Verb • A compound subject consists of 2 or more subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb. (Usually the conjuctionand or or. Example: Daviontae and Darryl will go to the park after school. • A compound verb consists of two or more verbs that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same subject. (Usually the conjunctions and, but, or or). Example: Anishafinished the book but forgot her homework.
