  3. Today’s Objectives • To define and identify simple and compound sentences by labeling • To study by creating a folding study guide for all concepts in Chapter 1

  4. Simple sentence • A simple sentence is one complete thought that can stand on it’s own. • Simple sentences can have compound subjects, compound verbs, or both. • But, there is only one complete subject and one complete predicate.

  5. Is it simple or not? Yes Yes • John picks his nose. • John and Bill are the grossest kids in school. • Darlene likes John despite his gross habit, and she is his girlfriend • Although they are best friends, John and Bill do not have many hobbies in common except nose picking. No No

  6. Compound Sentences • Compound sentences have two complete thoughts (with subjects and predicates) joined together in one of three ways • A coordinating conjunction • A semicolon • A semicolon, conjunctive adverb and comma

  7. Is it compound or not? • John picks his nose and flicks his boogers. • John and Bill are the grossest kids in school. • Darlene likes John despite his gross habit, and she is his girlfriend • Although they are best friends, John and Bill do not have many hobbies in common except nose picking.
