Sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle Exercise Sleep Nutrition
Sleep allows our body to rest and repair itself • Sleep: • Allows our body to rest • Our muscles, our senses • Gives us energy, makes us alert • Improves movement and coordination • Helps brain to repair and reorganize • Allows for learning and memory • Improves mood
Some parts of our body slow down: • Breathing • Heart rate • Digestion • Other parts speed up: • Our BRAIN Sleeping is an active process
Brain activity is measured as electric waves A special machine measures and records our brain waves, as reflected in an electroencephalogram (EEG)
There are two types of sleep: REM and Non-REM • REM: Rapid eye movement • Our eyes rapidly move back and forth underneath our eyelids. • Dreaming occurs • Video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0DJzFDOgzg • NREM: Non-REM sleep • The Sleep Cycle alternates between REM and NREM sleep.
Stages of Sleep • Stage 1 and 2: We fall asleep, but are not in a deep sleep. • Stage 3 and 4: We are in a deep sleep, and our body’s activities slow down. • Stages 1 4 are part of Non-REM sleep. • Stage 5: REM sleep

The hypothalamus helps regulate sleep The hypothalamus sets something called our biological clock
The Biological Clock • Our biological clock controls when we go to sleep and when we wake up. Awake Asleep
Clock-Dependent Alerting • Clock-dependent alerting (CDA) is a wake-up signal from our brains to maintain alertness. • CDA keeps us awake during the day, giving us periods of high alertness and energy.
Sleep Need “Sleep need” is the amount of sleep we need to stay alert during the day. How many hours do teenagers need to sleep each night? How many hours did you sleep last night?
Sleep debt • Sleep debt is when we get less sleep than we need. We need: We get: Sleep debt:
Sleep debt adds up! 2 hours+ 1 hour+ 2 hours= 5 hours of sleep debt
How do we get rid of sleep debt? • Pay it back! • The only way to eliminate sleep debt is to sleep extra. • Take naps
Consequences of Sleep Deprivation • Too much accumulated sleep debt results in sleep deprivation. • Consequences: • Weight gain • Acne • Trouble concentrating in class • Poor sports performance • Bad mood • More likely to get sick • Poor memory • Slower reflexes
Sleep Deprivation can be deadly! • Sleepiness while driving leads to at least 100,000 traffic accidents every year.

Sleep disorders: Obstructive Sleep Apnea • Two symptoms: Loud snoring and daytime sleepiness • Consequence: A person’s airway becomes blocked, causing them to stop breathing and forcing them awake.
Sleep Disorders: Narcolepsy • The brain cannot control when and where a person falls asleep. • People with narcolepsy fall asleep suddenly and lose muscle movement. • Narcoleptic Dog Video: • http://www.bofunk.com/video/6297/skeeter_the_snoozey_poodle.html
