Reading texts that Inform and Entertain To Entertain or Inform? Many texts will be both informative and entertaining. In pairs, read the text below. Highlight informative and entertaining words or phrases. John Winston Ono Lennon is one of the most famous musical artists ever. He shot to fame as one of The Beatles. He co-wrote most of the band’s songs, the majority of which are now rock classics. Lennon was born in Liverpool in 1940. He was brought up by an aunt, who bought him a harmonica and taught him how to play the banjo. Lennon met Paul McCartney in 1957. They became friends and started to write songs together and formed a band called ‘The Quarrymen’. They became the most successful and influential acts in musical history. Researching texts that Inform and Entertain How many sources of information can you name? Think about the person you are researching, which sources are the most appropriate?
Find It Fast! Finding information can be time-consuming... here are a few things you can do to speed things up. • Scan for: • Contents list • Chapter headings • Bibliography/list of resources/ websites Search Engine • Skim for: • Title • First line of each paragraph • Key words • Type of vocabulary used Ask an expert
Skimming and Scanning Text Reading the whole article, chapter or an entire website for information is too time consuming. Skim Reading is useful for finding out quickly what the text is about, and whether it’s worth reading in more detail. Skim reading is much faster than normal reading. You may need to do some research within your vocational area; sources of information to look at include journals, statistics, newspaper reports and the internet. To skim read, run your eye down the page, looking at: titles, headings, key words etc. Scan Reading means glancing over text quickly to find information you are looking for. You scan the index of a catalogue to find out which page has the information you need. The point of scanning is to find information quickly, without reading large chunks of text. To scan a piece of text, look for: the contents page, chapter headings etc.
You may find it useful to highlight keywords and phrases. Highlighting helps you to remember where important information is on the page. It may help to use a colour code; with two or more colours for each specific piece of information, egred for entertaining words or phrasesand blue for informativewords or phrases.
Remember to present your information using an appropriate format (eg when writing a formal letter, report or article), so that the written document is easily understood, follows accepted conventions, and is engaging to the reader Mistakes to avoid ......
