  1. Recommended Tabulations and Dissemination Section A

  2. What are Tabulations? Tabulation programs should be developed at the beginning of the survey/census process A table presents summarized statistical data in ordered rows and columns, including: • Item totals • Total units with specific characteristics • Averages • Percentages

  3. Table Classifications • Data is usually grouped or classified to facilitate data presentation • International classifications should be used where possible • National classifications should be able to provide data by international classifications where they differ

  4. Main Classification Items • Administrative or agro-ecological zones • National groupings • All holdings • Legal status of holder • Household and non-household sector classifications • All holdings • Area of holding • Without land, with land from less than 0.1ha to 2,500 ha and over • All holdings

  5. Main Classification Items • Area of agricultural land • Without land, with land from less than 0.1ha to 2,500 ha and over • All holdings • Number of livestock (by type) • Normally number groupings but general groupings can be large animals, small animals and poultry • All holdings • Main purpose of production • Producing mainly for home consumption or mainly for sale • Single-holding households

  6. Main Classification Items • Household Size • 1 person, 2-3 persons, 4-5, 6-9, 10 or more persons • Single-holding households • Sex of holder • Individual holder (male/female) multiple co-holders (all male, all female, both male and female) • Single-holding households • Age of holder • Individual holder (<25 years, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65 years and older) multiple co-holders • Single-holding households

  7. Core Module Cross Tabulations • Irrigation • Temporary crops • Permanent crops • Livestock numbers • Aquaculture • Forest and other wooded land • Other economic activities • Location of agricultural holding • Legal status • Sex of holder • Age of holder • Household size • Main purpose of production • Land use type

  8. Supplementary Module Cross Tabulations • All supplementary modules are cross tabulated by the same nine core module items. • General recommendations are provided by the twelve supplementary module themes. • There are unlimited possible tabulations and each country should make their own tabulation program based on national needs.

  9. Supplementary Module Cross Tabulations • Land • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, area of holding and household size • Classification – are of parcel • Irrigation and water management • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, purpose of production and household size • Classification is area irrigated • Crops • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, purpose of production and household size • Classification is area of crop harvest

  10. Supplementary Module Cross Tabulations • Livestock • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, area of holding, purpose of production and household size • Classification – number of animals • Agricultural practices • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, area of holding, purpose of production and sex and age of holder • No classification • Agricultural services • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, legal status of holder, area of holding, purpose of production and sex and age of holder • No classification

  11. Supplementary Module Cross Tabulations • Demographic and social characteristics • Crossed with area of holding and number of livestock • Classification – sex and age of household members • Farm labor • Crossed with admin/ecological zone, area of holding, household size and sex and age of holder • Classification – sex and age • Household food security • Crossed with everything except legal status of holder • No classification

  12. Supplementary Module Cross Tabulations • Aquaculture • Crossed with admin/ecological zone and area of holding Classification – area of aquaculture • Forestry • Crossed with admin/ecological zone and area of holding • Classification – are of forest and other wooded land • Management of the holding • Crossed with everything except legal status of holder and purpose of production • Classification – sex and age of sub-holder

  13. Community Level Data • Provide summary community characteristics and cross tabulations with holding level data • Some classification required, such as travelling time • Main tabulations are by administrative/ecological zones but can also include: • Economic status • Seasonal food shortages

  14. Community by Holding Level Items • Access to farm inputs • Access to rural bank • Access to farmer’s associations • Presence of development programs • Access to urban center • Risk of natural disasters • Economic status • Seasonal food shortages • Agricultural produce market • Access to veterinary services

  15. Tabulation Specifications • Table shell with headings, rows and each cell defined in terms of how it is calculated from variables • Shows layout, provides text for headings, and ensures no mistakes in calculation of table cells • Facilitates communication and expedites programming

  16. Production of Tabulations • Table specifications • Table programming and refinement by tabulation team • Final tabulation number checks • Special request tabulations

  17. Tabulation Controls • Computer Program Specifications • User Approval of Tables • Tables Grouped by Characteristics • Tables Checked Against Control Totals • Control Tables Show Weighted and Un-weighted Numbers • Geographic Subtotals Match • Final Table Review • Data Dissemination to User Community

  18. Dissemination Plans • Publication working group • Description of publication program • Directives • Calendar of activities

  19. Publication Preparation • Exhibits • Standard portions of text • Methodology • Maps • Historical data

  20. Section A Quiz • What is the advantage of the modular approach and the consistent core module for tabulations? • How many main/core module classification items are there? • In what two ways are community level data tabulated? • Are table specifications necessary?
