Self-directed learning • Individual takes initiative • Manage own learning activities • Autonomy • Occur in many settings • No age restriction • Desire and motivation to learn more • Self-disciplined, self-confident, and goal-oriented
Formal learning • Structured • Instructor • Predetermined objectives to be met • Informational lectures, exams, and assignments • Evaluation activities • Degrees and certificates earned
Give students as much control as possible in their own learning…
Actions to Become More Self-Directed in Online Classroom • Challenge something • Critique or revise something • Initiate new conversations • Find articles and present to class • Form theories based upon observations and/or data • Engage a mentor to learn more • Learn by trial and error • Learn by teaching yourself and someone else
Informal learning “learning because one wants to learn” • Structured or unstructured • Planned or unplanned • No teacher, mediator, or professor • Self-directed learning • Searching on Internet for more information on classroom topics • Discussing topics outside classroom
Conclusion • Self-directed learning is beneficial to online classroom • Self-directed learning is always present in informal learning • Self-directed learning is a necessity for formal learning
