  3. Family Life • The fifth of Gertha (mother) and Cicero Leonard's seven children • He was named after his mother's favorite singer, Ray Charles. • Leonard grew up in a loving home

  4. Family Life • His father earned a living as a night manager at a supermarket • Mother worked as a nurse • Finances were often tight

  5. Childhood • Leonard was a shy child • He stayed home a lot, reading comic books and playing with his dog • He never did talk too much

  6. Education • Sugar Ray Leonard went to high school at Parkdale High School. Parkdale High School is located at 6001 Good Luck Road in Riverdale, MD. • Ray decided to stick with boxing instead of pursuing a college education

  7. Hardships • He struggled with rage, addiction, abuse and depression • His mother and father had health issues • The family needed money and he turned professional for that reason

  8. Achievements • He won the National Golden Gloves in 1973 • He was crowned the national Amateur Athletic Union champion • Leonard won three National Golden Gloves and two AAU championships and the 1975 Pan American title • His victories included wins over Roberto Duran and Thomas Hearns.

  9. Accomplishments • Leonard retired from boxing for good in 1997 • He finished his pro boxing career with a 36-3-1 record and 25 knockouts. • He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1998 Sugar Ray Leonard is considered to be one of the best boxers of all time

Today’s life • He become a successful motivational speaker, actor and commercial endorser • Today, he is one of the most revered boxers and has set great examples for decades to come • The public simply loved him for his agreeable persona and his sweet looking face which is miraculously unscarred.
