Mixture of adult supported groups & child-initiated activities (less choosing time) • Support their increasing independence & responsibility • Reading everyday • Label all clothing & belongings • Encourage them to check their own book bag! • Phonics screening statutory check in summer term
Transition to Year 2 • We continue to build on the knowledge and skills acquired in Reception and Year 1 • Lesson sessions become longer • Less time for free play • Greater expectations of the children’s listening skills and work ethic • Encouragement of greater independence • Curriculum is planned and differentiated to meet the needs of all the children • Opportunities will be planned so that the children will work with the other Year 2 children in Otter class • Music with Mrs Parsons (recorders???) • End of Key Stage 1 Assessment
Routines • Book bags everyday with books & reading record • Spellings: Spellings will go out on the Monday and then encourage your child to practise all week for a spelling check on Friday • We encourage ‘Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check • Handwriting: Cursive style • Homework: Spellings, reading, phonics and action words • Reading: please hear you child read EVERY DAY • Books: Please sign the reading record when your child reads a book • Milk if ordered • Mr Fox & celebration assembly • Showing • Pick ups at home time
A typical lesson: • 10 minutes - Whole class text focus • 25 minutes - Independent group work • 10 minutes - Plenary session & self evaluation • Guided Reading daily • Letters & Sounds / Phonics sessions daily split 4 ways
Reading Strategies • Look at the pictures • Sound out all the letters • Chunk longer word into smaller sounds then blend them back together • r-ea-d-i-ng reading • Miss the tricky word out and read to the end of the sentence. Then go back to the beginning of the sentence and think about words would make sense.
Mathematics • A typical lesson: • 5 minutes – oral and mental starter • 10 minutes – whole class teaching • 25 minutes - independent work • 10 minutes – plenary to share learning
PE • Monday and Wednesday afternoon • PE Kit: in school at all times • Please ensure no jewelleryis worn • Girls with long hair must have it tied back • Clubs
Assessment • Transition meetings where we discussed each child • Teachers and Teaching assistants continually assess & monitor children’s learning. • Plan & deliver lessons matched to abilities • Marking • Phonics Screening statutory check in Summer term • End of key stage 1 assessments
Communication • Open door policy • Use reading record for communication about reading • Call office if child is absent • Fox Going Home Sheet on clip board • Website Fox class pages- will be updated soon!
Helping your child • Early nights are really important • Regular daily reading • Practisingweekly spellings and handwriting • Find every opportunity to count, make comparisons, play games • Keep ‘Show & tell’ appropriate • Attendance
Parent help in the classroom • Any help in the classroom will be gratefully received. This extra help greatly enhances the children’s learning and enables us to undertake some activities otherwise not possible without extra adult supervision. • In order to help in the classroom you will need to have had your DBS check carried out as soon as possible!
