Adding and Subtracting Integers Get Ready for Some Fun!!!!!
Step 1 • Example: -8 – 3 = ? • First you must always look to see if you are being asked to add or subtract the integers. • If you are being asked to add move directly to step 3. • If you are being asked to subtract continue on to step 2. In this example, we are being asked to subtract so we will continue to step 2.
Step 2 • This step is called KCO. • You need to keep the first integer the same, • Change the subtraction sign to addition, • And change the second integers sign to its opposite sign. • (If it is a positive number, make it negative and if it is negative, make it positive) -8 – 3 -8 + (-3)
Step 3 • Look at the integers to determine which operation you will use. • If they have the same sign, (both positive or both negative), you will add the numbers together. -8 + (-3) = -11 But… -8 + 3, we will subtract because these do not have the same signs.
Step 4 • Now that you know the number, you need to see if the answer will be positive or negative. • Your answer will take the sign of the larger whole number. Ex: -8 + 3 = (8 - 3 = 5) 8 > 3 and the 8 is negative, so your answer will also be negative. -5
