Blackboard at Northwestern A customer since 1999 Broad adoption among both faculty and students Over 2,100 courses using Bb per quarter But Bb alone is often no more than a mechanism to deliver documents -- built initially to solve the instructor's problem of delivering packaged information to students and aggregate student-created content for the instructor

  4. Technology to support a new model Collaborative construction of new knowledge rather thanrelying on an instructor to drum information into students

  5. Adopting a Collaboration Platform Google Apps for Education deployed at Northwestern in 2007 Objective #1: Fill a gap in providing email to students Objective #2: Find out whether the other Apps offer new options for student collaboration

  7. What does Bboogle do? • Provides access to Google Apps content to students and faculty through the Blackboard interface

  8. What does Bboogle do? 2.  Manages access permissions for Google Apps content for the instructor

  9. Permissions: The Secret Sauce Students in the class are given read or read/write permissions on a Doc / Calendar / Site automatically Enables actions like: • Collaborative development of a wiki (Site) • Shared assembly of data (Doc spreadsheet) • Coordination of a class and individual Calendars • Immediate sharing of students' writing
