Chapter 14 DNA: The Genetic Material By: Daniel Cazares del Castillo William Hoover Max Flohr
DNA is made of a double right-handed helix • DNA has three basic components • A five-carbon sugar • A phosphate (PO4) group • A nitrogenous Base DNA Structure
The four nitrogenous bases are • Adenine • Thymine • Guanine • Cytosine • The two strands of DNA are held together by hydrogen bonds by specific base pairings • The parings are • Adenine – Thymine (2 Hydrogen bonds) • Guanine – Cytosine (3 Hydrogen bonds) Nitrogenous Bases
Each strand of DNA is made of repeating sugars and phosphate units joined by phosphodiester bonds this is called phosphodiester bonds. Phosphate Backbone
DNA replication is semiconservative, that means that the new strand of DNA uses a piece of the old strand. Replication
