Randall’s position • What is his position regarding the problem ? • When he arrives in the office, he thinks he doesn’t have anything to hold it against himself. He thought he had done everything he had to do, and he thought he remains very professional during his relationship with Abbe, including in the e-mails. • He wants to fire Abbe, because he thinks she cannot work with him anymore, and he reproaches her with being unprofessional. • He feels like he has been working alone, without Abbe’s help.

Bill’s position • What is his problem ? • Two managers who manage the same team can’t work together anymore. They use harsh words, such as “sexual harassment”, “suiting” … This can lead to problems into the company. • Another thing that grinds his gears is that his managers also use professional e-mailing tools for personal discussions.
Bill’s position • What do you think of the way Bill handles the situation, the meeting ? • He listens to Randall’s point of view before starting discussion. • He resets the discussion and knows how to put Randall in his place. • He doesn’t pick size, he wants to analyse the entire situation and to have a meeting with Abbe in order to get her version of the story. • Despite Randall’s seniority, Bill reproaches him for having used the e-mail of the company to discuss personal issues, and he tells him that he should have come sooner. This could have permitted to anticipate a very tense situation, and to solve the situation before it gets worse and very delicate.
Suggestions Suggestions to Randall • He should let his manager handle the situation, without going to see Abbe. • He should be more professional and he must not mix his private life with is professional life. Suggestions to Bill • He should interview Abbe, in order to have her opinion on the situation, and, if possible, restore the communication between Abbe and Randall. • He should ensure that Randall doesn’t see Abbe before he does: maybe putting him in suspension, for having used the e-mail of the company to discuss personal issues. • In all the cases, he must forecast to transfer Abbe and/or Randall, to protect themselves and to assure the good processing of the teams.
