The New ProjectManager By Mary Brandel
New Challenges • Business success is more and more related to projects • Time frames for completion are compressed • Cross-functional teams • Cross-cultural teams • Project managers must adapt
Broaden your View • Understand the business • Understand your users • Look beyond your immediate circle • Ask questions
Communicate in 3-D • New project managers must communicate • Project teams may consist of people outside your office • Project managers must coordinate with people who might not even be on the same continent
Communicate in 3-D • Globalization is bringing cultural gaps straight into the conference room • Project managers must close the cultural gaps that may arise • Project managers should try and have group members meet as early as possible in the project
Become Worldly-Wise • Bring into account all of the diversity of team members. • Know the different political aspects of the countries in which they do business. • Take duties, tariffs, royalties, etc. into account when doing global business.
Be a Political Operative • Be politically savvy • Understand people and their motivation • Always figure out who to ally with and those to watch out for • Maintain favorable relationships with coworkers, sponsors, other companies etc.
Assert Yourself • Be outspoken • Don’t take no for an answer • Be firm with you decisions and opinions, don’t let other’s opinions knock your project off course
Be Flexible • Test new ideas for a sample period before permanent implementation. • Have back-up or alternative options for problems that may arise throughout operations.
Social Skills • Aside from raw performance, management is now starting to focus on the social aspect of operations. • Nothing replaces experience when wanting to improve one’s social skills.
