  1. Simulations Required for ReviewPeter Jacobs, LBNL • Basis for EMCal physics case: • Trigger: p0/g, e, jet • Full jet reconstruction • Gamma/pi0 discrimination • Electron/hadron discrimination • (neutron background) • Need to assess impact of EMCal on key physics measurements • not sufficient only to quote resolutions or background suppression factors • Need to assess impact of reduces acceptances (staging and “upgrade” scenarios) An EMC for ALICE

  2. Trigger • p0/g trigger: PHOS technology in hand • no simulations needed of hardware performance (?) • Jet trigger: see talks by pmj and Chris • imho understood sufficiently except for HLT rejection performance (use offline reco to study) • Electrons: new topic, needs targeted study • some back of envelope calculations would help and may be all that is possible in time remaining • compare to other ALICE lepton measurements •  new manpower needed! An EMC for ALICE

  3. g/p0 • See Marco’s talk • need to incorporate cross sections, g/p0 ratio • estimate fragmentation photon contributions An EMC for ALICE

  4. Electron/hadron discrimination • Role of EMCal in ALICE for electrons: • vs TRD? • in coincidence with TRD? • e-mu coincidence w/ muon arm? • No time before December to dig into this in detail • needs new effort An EMC for ALICE

  5. Full jet reconstruction • IMHO this is the centerpiece of the physics case for the EMCAL • Thus far there are detailed studies of specific response but afaik only partial assessment of physics performance • Need to assess finite resolution in light of physical spectrum • Need to assess effects of jet quenching • Varying background: p+p, minbias Pb+Pb, central Pb+Pb • Need to compare leading hadrons vs charged jets vs full jets (w/ EMCal) An EMC for ALICE

  6. A. Morsch, ECT talk Oct 05 ? An EMC for ALICE

  7. physical spectrum Ereco/Ethrown d-fn input Ethrown Not the clearest way to plot it , need to redo and expand… An EMC for ALICE

  8. Jet physics simulations • TPC+EMCal response: use detailed geant w/ d-fn input parameterize • Throw physical distribution w/ parameterized response • Look at bias on parton energy distribution • Leading particle vs charged jets vs full jets • pp vs PbPbminbias vs PbPbcentral • quenching models IMHO this issue is central to physics case: need to make signficant progress in next month An EMC for ALICE

  9. Reduced acceptance p0 etc: rate scales linearly with acceptance Finite size jet patch: slightly more complicated but still geometric No advantage to detailed simulations: Tom should define the scenarios, then redo the simple acceptance calculations: Full acceptance An EMC for ALICE
