Summary of the 2012 New Jersey Proficiency Assessment of State Standards (NJPASS) Test Results for Grade 2 This standards-based test was administered to grade two students district-wide in the content areas of Language Arts Literacy (LAL) and Mathematics. NJPASS Review of Performance for Grade 2 - 671 students were tested; 606 students with valid scores in LAL and 596 students with valid scores in Mathematics. Language Arts Literacy: - An increase of 4.8% compared to the performance in 2011. - An improvement in Florence Avenue, Grove Street, Thurgood Marshall, and Chancellor Avenue Schools. Madison Avenue School also improved. - All schools performed between 49% and 71%; the overall District performance was 55.8%. Mathematics: - A decrease of 0.8% compared to the performance in 2011. - An improvement in Florence Avenue, Thurgood Marshall, and Grove Street Schools. - All schools performed between 51% and 64%; the overall District performance was 59.2%.

Grade 3 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Spring 2012 2012 NJASK 3: Review of Performance Language Arts Literacy: - An increase of 8.66% compared to the performance in 2011. - All schools increased when compared to the performance in 2011. - A total of three (3) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - Two hundred twenty-seven (227) students out of the five hundred sixty-two (562) total students scored in the advanced proficient and proficient categories. Mathematics: - An increase of 5.24% compared to the performance in 2011. - All schools but two (2) increased when compared to the performance in 2011. - A total of three (3) students from Berkeley Terrace and Thurgood Marshall Schools had perfect scores of 300. - Seventy-eight (78) students scored in the advanced proficient category; an increase of twenty-one (21) students compared to 2011. - Three hundred thirteen (313) students out of the five hundred seventy-three (573) total students scored in the advanced proficient and proficient categories.

Grade 4 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Spring 2012 2012 NJASK 4: Review of Performance Language Arts Literacy: - A slight decrease of 0.97% compared to the performance in 2011. - Five (5) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - One hundred seventy-six (176) students out of the five hundred thirty-nine (539) total students scored in the advanced proficient and proficient categories. Mathematics: - A decrease of 6.36% compared to the performance in 2011. - Four (4) students from Chancellor Avenue, Madison Avenue, and Mt. Vernon Avenue Schools had perfect scores of 300. - A total of four (4) students from Grove Street and Madison Avenue Schools had almost perfect scores of 299. - Sixty-three (63) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - Two hundred seventy-three (273) students out of the five hundred forty-three (543) total students scored in the advanced proficient and proficient categories. Science: - An increase of 2.05% compared to the performance in 2011. - Two (2) students from Chancellor Avenue and Mt. Vernon Avenue Schools had perfect scores of 300. - Ninety-six (96) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - Four hundred twenty (420) students out of the five hundred forty-three (543) total students scored in the advanced proficient and proficient categories.

Grade 5 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Spring 2012 2012 NJASK 5: Review of Performance Language Arts Literacy - The District and five (5) schools outperformed the DFG A: Grove Street, Madison Avenue, Mt. Vernon Avenue, Thurgood Marshall, and University Elementary. - A decrease in percent proficient in most schools except an increase of 8.1% at Madison Avenue, 5.1% at Grove Street, 8.0% at University Elementary, and 29.6% at Thurgood Marshall. - Four (4) students scored in the advanced proficient category. Mathematics: - Three (3) students had perfect scores of 300 from Madison Avenue, Thurgood Marshall, and University Elementary. - Eighty-one (81) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - An increase in percent proficient in all schools except Berkeley Terrace and Florence Avenue.

Grade 7 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Spring 2012 2012 NJASK 7: Review of Performance Language Arts Literacy: - An increase of 2.5% proficiency for Union Avenue Middle School. - A decrease in proficiency for the District and University Middle School. - Four (4) students scored in the advanced proficient category. Mathematics: - One (1) student from Union Avenue Middle School had a perfect score of 300. - An increase in proficiency for the District and both middle schools. - Twenty-two (22) students scored in the advanced proficient category.

Grade 8 New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge Spring 2012 2012 NJASK 8: Review of Performance Language Arts Literacy: - Eleven (11) students scored in the advanced proficient category. - The district had a slight increase compared to the performance level in 2011. An increase of 1.5% proficiency for Union Avenue Middle and an increase of 0.1% proficiency for University Middle School. Mathematics: - Three (3) students from Union Avenue Middle and one (1) student from University Middle School had a perfect score of 300. - Forty-one (41) students scored in the advanced proficient category compared to twenty-seven (27) in 2011. -An increase of 5.4% proficiency for Union Avenue Middle and a decrease of 11.8% proficiency for University Middle School. Science: - Thirty-five (35) students scored in the advanced proficient category compared to twenty-two (22) in 2011. - An increase of 12.7% proficiency for Union Avenue Middle School. - A decrease of 5.6% proficiency for University Middle School.

  27. 2012 New Jersey Alternate Proficiency Assessment (NJAPA) Highlights from the 2012 APA Performance Results for NJASK 3-8, HSPA, & NJBCT - 76 students were evaluated for the 2012 APA; an increase of seven students compared to 2011. - Grade six has the largest number of APA participants (13 students). - 62 (about 81.6%) males participated in the APA compared to 14 (about 18.4%) females. - 6 students in grades 9 and 10 were evaluated in Science to meet the NJBCT requirement. Language Arts Literacy (LAL) - An increase in percent proficient for total students in grades 4, 6, and 8 when compared to percent proficient in 2011. Percent proficient decreased for grades 3, 5, 7, and 11. Mathematics - An increase in percent proficient for total students in grades 5, 6, 8 and 11 when compared to percent proficient in 2011. Percent proficient decreased for grades 3, 4, and 7. Science - A decrease in percent proficient for total students in grades 4, 8, and 11 compared to 2011.

Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State to State for English Language Learners (ACCESS for ELLs) English Language Proficiency Test Spring 2012 • 2012 ACCESS for ELLs: Review of Performance • - 605 students in grades K-12 took the ACCESS for ELLs test, an increase of 86 students when compared • to 2011. • Some students in grades K, 1, 3, 4, 5, and 11 were reported to have completed the entire continuum – the • sixth level of Reaching. • Some students in grades K, 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, and 12 were in the fifth English Language Proficiency level – Bridging. • A large number of our ELLs overall scores were within the first four English Language Proficiency • levels of Entering, Beginning, Developing, and Expanding. • 13% of the ELLs tested in grade 4 were in the sixth level of Reaching. • More students were at the sixth level of Reaching in 2012 compared to 2011.

  31. 2012 American Diploma Project (ADP) Algebra I End-of-Course Summary of the American Diploma Project (ADP) Algebra I End-of-Course Exam Results Spring 2012 - 623 was the highest scaled score for 8th graders, 480 for 9th graders, 410 for 10th graders. - Median Scaled Scores by Content Standard for UAMS are better than the scores for the State in all the content standards. - Median Scaled Scores by Content Standard for UMS are comparable with the scores for the State in three content standards; and better by three points in Linear Relationships. - 65% of the students from UAMS performed at either proficient or advanced proficient level; an increase of 29% compared to 2011. - 25% of students from UMS performed at either proficient or advanced proficient level; an increase of 20% compared to 2011. - Percentage achieving mastery by Content Standard is higher for students in 8th grade than those in 9th grade.

  35. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2012 HSPA (GRADE 11) TEST RESULTS - For Total Population, there was a decrease of 3.2% in LAL from 68.7% in 2011 to 65.5% proficient or above in 2012. However, there was an increase of 12.0% in Math from 23.5% in 2011 to 35.5% in 2012. - An increase of 0.7% in LAL performance and an increase of 5.8% in Math performance for Special Education students in 2012. - Overall trend in the performances of General Education students indicates an increase of 1% in LAL and 22.1% in Math in 2012. - Female students out-performed male students in LAL by 12.6%, while the male students performed higher than their female counterparts in Math by 6.1% - Economically disadvantaged students out-performed the Non-Economically disadvantaged students in LAL by 6.3% and Math by 17.7% - For LEP population, 6.8% proficient or above in LAL and 5.3% proficient or above in Math.
