Our Brother Jesus Hebrews 2:10-18
Brother Jesus • Lord, Master, Savior, Redeemer, King, Christ … • It’s a little uncomfortable calling Jesus “brother” because we know all too well who we are • “My brother Jesus” sounds too familiar • We like to keep some distance between our sinfulness and Jesus’ sinlessness • We are ashamed that Jesus has such a close kinship with us • But Jesus is not ashamed (Heb 2:11-13)! • What makes us siblings is not that we act or think alike but that we have a common Father
Flesh-and-Blood Jesus • To help us he had to match us; he had to share our flesh and blood (organ transplant) • Jesus was not something other but became like us in every way • Why? (Heb 2:14-16) • Only one who fully experienced death could free us from death. Only one who truly suffered could end our suffering. Only one who was really tempted could help us in temptation. • God helped us by matching us and becoming one of us
Suffering Jesus • Jesus suffered as he struggled with right and wrong (Heb 2:17-18) • He heard the voices of temptation • Jesus felt the compulsion to turn away from God • Jesus blazed the trail of our salvation, cutting through the tangled underbrush of temptation so our path would be clear – Gary Holloway (Heb 2:10)
Application • Just as Jesus became one of us, we too will be like brother Jesus when we are brought to glory • Just as brother Jesus helps us through sufferings and temptations, we too ought to help our brothers and sisters • How are you doing today?
