Changes to PMC regulations 2008/09 Presentation to the meeting of the Partnerships Forum, 24th September 2008
Context • Students, assessment and ‘things that get in the way’ • PMC regs as the challenging bastard child of Mollycoddling Mum and Draconian Dad • Why don’t we have a ‘fit to sit’ policy?
Underpinning principles • Fairness – to individuals in light of their specific circumstances • Equity – of treatment for all in the consistent application of processes • Transparency – of processes and outcomes
PMC criteria • Acute – not ongoing, occurred rapidly • Severe – significant impact on performance • Timely – circumstances occurred in sufficient proximity to assessment • Unexpected – could not be foreseen
Deferral • Single deferral per assessment attempt
Deferred consideration • Exceptional circumstances • Alternative avenues • Submission & consideration of an application • Timescales, recording and feedback
Confidentiality and disclosure • Legislation (data protection) • Appeals and complaints • University policy • Rights and responsibilities of the student • Constraints upon assessment board discussions
