  2. Context • Students, assessment and ‘things that get in the way’ • PMC regs as the challenging bastard child of Mollycoddling Mum and Draconian Dad • Why don’t we have a ‘fit to sit’ policy?

  3. Underpinning principles • Fairness – to individuals in light of their specific circumstances • Equity – of treatment for all in the consistent application of processes • Transparency – of processes and outcomes

  4. PMC criteria • Acute – not ongoing, occurred rapidly • Severe – significant impact on performance • Timely – circumstances occurred in sufficient proximity to assessment • Unexpected – could not be foreseen

  5. Deferral • Single deferral per assessment attempt

  6. Deferred consideration • Exceptional circumstances • Alternative avenues • Submission & consideration of an application • Timescales, recording and feedback

  7. Confidentiality and disclosure • Legislation (data protection) • Appeals and complaints • University policy • Rights and responsibilities of the student • Constraints upon assessment board discussions
