  3. You will be able to successfully fill out a job application. • You will be able to differentiate between task, purpose, and audience. • You will be able to write to a specific task, purpose, and audience. Goals

  4. Authors write for three reasons: • To inform • To persuade • To entertain Author’s Purpose (take notes)

  5. To Inform: to give you information on a topic. • Usually consists of only the facts • Examples: • Brochures • Articles • Research summaries • Textbooks • Non-Fiction trade and picture books • How-to manuals and instruction books • Cookbooks • Self-help books Author’s Purpose (take notes)

  6. To persuade: to get you to behave in a certain way • Uses facts to back up opinions • Examples: • Book or movie review • Restaurant reviews • Editorial articles • Political position papers and speeches • Advertisements and commercials Author’s Purpose (take notes)

  7. To entertain: for your enjoyment and fun • Fiction usually falls into this category • Examples: • Novels • Plays • Diaries • Short Stories • Poetry • Facebook/Instagram/Twitter statuses and pictures Author’s Purpose (take notes)

  8. Writers have to take task, audience, and purpose into account when writing anything • Task: What type of writing are you doing? A letter? A résumé? A fictional story? • Audience: Who will be reading the piece? • Purpose: Why are you writing this? Task, Audience, and Purpose (take notes)

  9. Read the prompt • Identify task, audience, and purpose • Write keeping task, audience, and purpose in mind • This will be timed!  Application Exercise
