Authors write for three reasons: • To inform • To persuade • To entertain Author’s Purpose (take notes)
To Inform: to give you information on a topic. • Usually consists of only the facts • Examples: • Brochures • Articles • Research summaries • Textbooks • Non-Fiction trade and picture books • How-to manuals and instruction books • Cookbooks • Self-help books Author’s Purpose (take notes)
To persuade: to get you to behave in a certain way • Uses facts to back up opinions • Examples: • Book or movie review • Restaurant reviews • Editorial articles • Political position papers and speeches • Advertisements and commercials Author’s Purpose (take notes)
To entertain: for your enjoyment and fun • Fiction usually falls into this category • Examples: • Novels • Plays • Diaries • Short Stories • Poetry • Facebook/Instagram/Twitter statuses and pictures Author’s Purpose (take notes)
Writers have to take task, audience, and purpose into account when writing anything • Task: What type of writing are you doing? A letter? A résumé? A fictional story? • Audience: Who will be reading the piece? • Purpose: Why are you writing this? Task, Audience, and Purpose (take notes)
