Kaposi’s Sarcoma By: Cody Hull Period 3 Biology March 2, 2005 I did not lie, cheat, or steal to complete this work.
Part of the Body Affected • Lesions appear: • Under the surface of the skin. • On mucous membranes. • May also be found in internal organs. • Particularly the respiratory system or gastrointestinal system.
Signs • Lesions appear. • May be red, purple, brown, or black. • Can be found on: • The skin • Mucous Membranes • Sometimes in Internal Organs
Symptoms • Having AIDS • Skin or mucous membrane lesions. • Not often fatal. • Unless: • Cause enough swelling to obstruct circulation or breathing. • Lesions in the mouth prevent eating. • Lesions affecting internal organs • Can cause bleeding which is more often fatal. • Prevented by: • Safe sex • Abstinence
How is it Diagnosed? • Suspected by appearance of lesions and risk factors. • Definite diagnosis can only be made by: • Biopsy and microscopic examination. • Shows the presence of spindle cells. • Detection of viral protein LANA in tumor cells confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment • No known cure • Treatment is focused on destroying present lesions. • By: • Chemotherapy drugs (paclitaxel and bleomycin) • Radiation therapy • Surgical removal
Incidence of the cancer Worldwide • In Africa KS has become most frequently reported cancer in some countries • Such as Zimbabwe. • During early years of AIDS epidemic incidence of KS almost exclusively among male homosexuals. • In North America and Europe
Current clinical trials for new Treatments • New Angiogenesis inhibitors • A.K.A. Drugs that block development of blood vessels in tumors. • Blood vessels main component of KS lesions. • New combinations of current chemotherapy drugs • New ways of delivering chemotherapy • encapsulation in fat globules called liposomes • Most effective: • Research into treatment of AIDS and HIV.
