Lap by Lap: Lessons Learned from the 2007 SSAI SCESP Innovations Grant Competition Tuesday, September 9, 2008Senior Service America, Inc.
Objective • Project Directors who want to build their proposal writing capacity • Using examples from the SCSEP Innovations proposals received • Share basic tips • Plenty of time for discussion or questions
Background • October – Request for Proposals announced • October 25 & 29 - Bidding call • November 16 - applications received 28 • December 14 - Grants awarded • 100K; January 1-June 30, 2008 • 100K; July 1- December 31, 2008
Creative ideas are out there! • No problem, I’ll get a gerontologist! • No problem, I’ve got partners! • Leveraged other funds and PC donations • Reverse inter-generational • Civic engagement/self empowerment
Common themes: • Wanted funding for computer training or WIA mandates • Request to fund existing programs • Was that a complaint?(just a teeny, tiny bit) • Benchmarks and timelines not clear • Struggle with the dual mission
SSAI reviewers: • Did we do it right? • What is …distinction between routine and ordinary vs. Innovation? • Maybe restructure the RFP…..deliverables, timelines, outcomes • Develop a checklist to accompany RFP
Innovators • Host agency involvement (surveyed pre writing) • Added value to the participants pockets • Assist those at durational limit • Offered letters of support from community partners • Strengthen community service • Participant input into process • New partners, adventure and celebration
Thinking • Look at the big picture; how does your organization fit? • Check your capacity • What is a Statement of Need? Can you define the problem? • Who’s your audience?
Planning • Use a check list – learn to dissect • Identify staff and other resources • Identify partners
Writing • Outcomes vs. Deliverables (they are different) • Objectives vs. Goals (Objectives are specific, measurable outcomes; Goals are more general) • Pay attention to the Project description (the nitty gritty) • Pay attention to basic requirements – font; page numbering; deadlines, etc.
Reviewing • Use multiple reviewers – different perspectives • Be able to defend
