What are waves? (not like the in ocean)
Waves a rhythmic repeating disturbance that travels through space or matter. Waves transfer energy, not matter (slinky demo) As energy moves through a medium in the form of a wave, the particles in the medium vibrate around their rest position.
Two types of waves Mechanical Waves: waves that require some type of medium to travel Examples: sound waves, waves you see in the ocean, seismic waves (aka Earthquakes) Electromagnetic Waves: wave that do not require a medium to travel, can travel in a vacuum Examples: light, radio, microwave, ultraviolet (we’ll learn a lot more about these later)
Ways Waves Move Transverse Wave A wave that vibrate at right angles to the direction of energy movement. (electromagnetic, water ripples) Compressional Wave (AKA Longitudinal) A wave that compresses the medium it travels through (sound waves) Slinky Demos
