The Energy Problem • In the last two years, growth in Chinese consumption has exceeded the total German consumption
Fusion as a solution • The amount of lithium contained in a laptop battery, combined with less than half a bathtub of water, will be able to provide enough fusion fuel to supply one person’s energy for 30 years.

This PhD • Modelling ECE diagnostics at JET using SPECE • Install SPECE code and use it to model JET shots • Add models of diagnostics onto SPECE • Install and optimise module into integrated system • Exploit physics capabilities of method • Reconstruct JET temperature profiles • Study impact of non-thermal electron distributions in JET • Study of system for use in ITER • ITER is the next big step for fusion (project unites EU, Japan, Russia, South Korea, India, US and China) • To be built in Southern France, operational by end of 2018
ITER • Now is an exciting time to join tokamak fusion research!
