  2. GOAL Our goal is to create the top college eligible students in MS; who also posses the skills and knowledge needed to becollegeand career PREPARED.

  3. Defining Characteristics of Career Academies 1. A small learning community, comprising a group of students within the larger high school who take classes together for at least 2 years, taught by a team of teachers from different disciplines 2. A college-preparatory curriculum with a career theme, enabling students to see relationships among academic subjects and their applications to a broad field of work 3. Partnerships with employers, the community, and local colleges, bringing resources from outside the high school to improve student motivation and achievement

Our Journey • Spring2011 • Wando High School • NCAC convention in Anaheim, CA. • May 2012, • Awarded Career Academy Grant from MDE • $45,000 over 3 years to research and implement the academy model. • Committee formed to investigate implementation • Fall of 2012 • NCAC convention in Nashville, TN

Our Journey • Spring 2013 • Group of teachers, counselors, administrators and a board member visited Springdale High School in Springdale, AR • Fall 2013 • Freshmen Seminar course at Sumner Hill began • Team attended Academies of Nashville Study Visit • Partnership Campaign began • Spring 2014 • School Wide PD day for CHS and Sumner Hill teachers focused on Academies. • Academy Teams began planning integrated lessons for 14/15 • Final Preparations being made for 1st academy cohort in Fall of 2014
