  2. What is Colon cancer? It is uncontrolled cell growth in the colon or rectum , or in the appendix.  Colon is a part of the alimentary canal – a segment of large intestine. 

  3. Signs & Symptoms: The classic warning signs include: Worsening constipation Blood in the stool Decrease in stool calibre Loss of appetite Loss of weight Nausea or vomiting

  4. Causes of Colon cancer: Risk factors include- Older age Male gender High intake of fat, alcohol or red meat Obesity Smoking Lack of physical exercise.

  5. Colon Treatment & Medications: Following medications are widely used in colon cancer treatment: Stivagra – It increases survival rate of colon cancer patients by 6.4%  It represses the growth of cancer through anti-angiogenesis around the tumor tissue. Side effects include nausea, asthenia, mucositis and hand-foot-skin reaction.

  6. Colon Treatment & Medications Following are some other colon cancer medications widely used for treatment : Avastin – The mechanism of Avastin is very similar to that of Stivagra. Side effects include proneness to infections, hypertension, bleeding, perforations in colon and stomach and thrombotic microangiopathy.

  7. Colon Treatment & Medications Arbitux – It works by inhibiting the epidermal growth factor receptor and hampers the growth of the cancer. Side effects include fever, chills, rigor, hypotension, dyspnea, angioedema, anaphylaxis and in extreme cases cardiac arrest.
