Science Fiction Novel Project By Andrew Martin and Jack Moosekian
SSetting This is what we think the giver community . All the houses are the same. This book occurs in a utopian society. Jonas and his family/friends live in a neighborhood, in one of the communities. The people in the communities do not usually visit each other. Also in the society planes cannot fly over the area unless they are delivering supplies. There are various buildings in the communities like the nurturing center, community building, the rehabilitation center, and many more.
C Jonas Physical description- Jonas is a 11-12 year old guy that has pale eyes. Character traits- Jonas is nice and loyal to his friends especially Asher. He is also respectful of his elders. Jonas is able to see the color in objects. Description- Jonas is a major character. He is also a dynamic character he changes by getting a new job and life. He is a antagonist because he runs away from the utopia and doesn’t agree with how it is run. This is what we think Jonas looks like he has longer hair and pale eyes. Jonas-
Lily C This is what we think Lily looks like. She has dark eyes and long hair. Physical description- Lily is a 7-8 year old who had ribbons in her long hair. She also has dark eyes like most people in the community. Character Traits- Lily is very nice and sweet. She is very eccentric compared to the other girls; for example all the girls wear ribbons in their hair but lily’s fall out and are untied. Description- Lily is a major character. She is also dynamic because she changes her maturity and job in the community. She is a protagonist because she doesn’t appose the community.
C Asher • Physical Description- 11-12 year old boy that has had trouble speaking and still has trouble with hand-eye coordination. He is friends with Jonas. • Character Traits- He is nice and he is also very funny. • Description- Asher is a main character that is dynamic because he is becoming more mature as the book goes on. We think that Asher looks like a blondish hair boy that is very optimistic about the world.
c The Receiver of Memory( The Giver) Physical description- The receiver of memory seems very old even though he isn't. He has gray hair, a long beard, and wrinkles. Character traits- He is very nice and respectful towards Jonas. He is also very optimistic that Jonas will be a good receiver of memory and thinks that he would do well. Description: He is a major character that is dynamic because before he was trained to be the receiver of memory he didn’t know anything outside of his own world This is what we think he looks like. A old man with gray hair and wrinkles.
c Gabriel • Physical description- Gabriel is a newborn. He has pale eyes like Jonas. Gabriel is underweight so they might deport him. • Character traits- he is a baby so we don’t know much about him • Description- Gabriel is a major character. We do not know if he is static or dynamic yet. We also don’t know if he is a protagonist or an antagonist. It is hard to tell with Gabriel because he doesn’t talk. This is what we think Gabriel looks like. He is a baby with pale eyes.
P Exposition Exposition is the beginning of a story where the events explain characters and the setting. Jonas is an Eleven and he sees the jet fly over the community. Jonas sees the apple changing when he is playing catch with Asher( a glint of red). Gabriel was born with pale eyes like Jonas has. Gabriel gets a comfort object that’s called a Hippo and they don’t know what a Hippo is. He is bathing Larissa and she talks to him about the recent releases from the community.
P Rising Action A series of events that lead up to the climax Jonas is sitting with his group of 11’s at the ceremony for the ceremony of 12’s Then the elders are announcing the new jobs for the 11’s and they skip Jonas and go on to the next person Jonas is very worried about why the elder skipped him, but at the end of the ceremony the elder says “ I apologize to you in particular. I caused you anguish.” then later she says “ Jonas has not been assigned.” … “He has been selected” Jonas was selected to be the new receiver of memory. Jonas goes to the annex where the old receiver of memory is (he is also called the giver). To give Jonas the memories The Giver puts his hand on Jonas’s back and remembers the memory, and it plays with Jonas in it in Jonas’s mind.
PRising action continued Some examples of memories the giver gave him are riding down a hill on a sled, Sunshine, Sunburn, Killing an elephant, snow, and guns.
P Climax The highest or most intense point in the story. When Gabe and Jonas leave to go to the other community. Also when planes fly over Gabe and Jonas trying to find them. Then when Jonas is going up the hill and he gives Gabe a warm memory to keep them going.
P Falling Action Falling action is how the book is wrapping up or ending. The falling action is when Jonas and Gabe finally reach the town and can relax.
R Resolution T Theme The resolution occurs when Jonas finds a sled at the top of the hill and slides down to the town and hears music and sees lights. The theme of The Giver a perfect world isn’t always a good world. I think that this shows in the book because the people that Jonas sees everyday are limited to the things that they can and can’t see or do or know about. “Ash?” he had called. “ Does anything seem strange to you? About the apple?” “Yes,” Asher called back, laughing. “ It jumps out of my hand onto the ground!” This is a good example because Jonas being able to see beyond can perceive color but all Asher can perceive is black and white.
C Conflict Man vs Nature – Jonas and Gabe were sliding down the hill on a sled to get away from the community. The sled on the snow and ice slowed them down to make it harder to get away from the people chasing them. Man vs Man – Jonas while getting the memories from the Giver had to battle against the memories so that he wouldn’t get hurt. Man vs Society – Jonas doesn’t think the society is run how he thinks that it should be run. He thinks that it should release the idea of sameness and that everyone could know what he knows
M Mood I think that the mood of the book is suspicious points. I think the book is suspicious because Jonas was not always truthful towards The Giver so you always thought that maybe he was planning something. A paasge we found was, ‘ That he had this power frightened him. He decided not to tell.’ p.117
