Terminal Learning Objective Action: Introduction to Modernized Demolition Initiators
HISTORY • Developed in the late 40s • Used in Civilian Market • Introduced to the Army in 1996 • Supplements and Partially Replaces the M6, M7 and Detonating Cord.
CONSIDERATIONS • MDI DOES NOT CHANGE CHARGE EMPLACEMENT OR SETUP • MDI IS STRICTLY AN IGNITION SYSTEM CHANGE.
CAPABILITIES • Standard military demolition missions • Deepwater up to 30 meters • Quarrying(with special application). • Instant or delay initiation • Eliminates accidental initiation from static, transmitters, or electrical discharge • Hybrid (two types of firing systems) • MDI Stand Alone • MDI/Det Cord, Det Cord/MDI
M12/M13-Cap M12/M13-Cap M15-Cap M15-Cap M11-Cap M11-Cap M14 Time Fuse M14 Time Fuse M81-FI M81-FI M9 Holder M9 Holder 8 COMPONENTS
M9 HOLDER • USES: • Secure a blasting cap (small flap end) • Secure shock tubes to the blasting cap (larger flap) • Can secure up to five shock tubes for initiation • PACKAGING: • 50 Ea Per box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total- 500
M9 HOLDER SECURING SHOCK TUBE • 1-2 Shock Tubes • Looped under holder • 3-5 Shock Tubes • Tied in a knot
M9 ISSUES • Secures only high strength caps (M11 & M14) • NOT REUSBLE • Unit must request enough to support all training and live fire missions
M11 BLASTING CAP • A branch line to a primary charge • To ignite shock tube or detonating cord • “High Strength Cap”
M11 DESCRIPTION • 2 FLAGS • 1 YELLOW (two meters from cap) • 1 RED (one meter from cap) • J HOOK CONNECTORUsed to secure det cord • PACKAGING • Individual coil—30ft. long • 6 coils per fiber board box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total= 60 coils
M11 ISSUES • Do Not Secure Det Cord and Shock Tube in the Same Holder • Do Not Hold Shock Tube When Firing • Use J- Hook to Secure to Det Cord • Plug and Sealed End
M12 TRANSMISSION LINE • Relay for the initiation pulse to another relay or high strength cap • Low Strength Cap • Command Detonation “ Transmission Line Only”
M12 PACKAGING • 500 FT. per spool • 2 Ea spools per foil bag • 4 bags per crate • Crate total- 8 spools/ 4000 Ft.
M13 TRANSMISSION LINE • Relay for the initiation pulse to another relay or high strength cap • Low Strength Cap • Command Detonation “ Transmission Line Only”
M13 PACKAGING • 1000 Ft spool • 1 spool per foil bag • 4 bags per crate • Crate Total= 4 spools/ 4000 Ft
M14 TIME DELAY • “High Strength Cap” • 5 minute delay • Length may be adjusted • Detonates Explosives, Det Cord or Shock Tube
M14 PACKAGING • Approx. 7 ½ ft. long • 6 coils per fiber board box • 10 boxes per crate • Crate Total= 60 Coils
M15 CAP, DELAY “ Currently a specialized use item only”
M15 USES • Provide a Delay in the System for Staged Demolitions • Is usually used for Quarrying Operations
M15 PACKAGING • 70 Ft Individual Coils • 6 Coils Per Fiber Board Box • 10 Boxes Per Crate • Crate Total- 60 Coils/ 4200 Ft
M81 IGNITER • To Ignite Time Blasting Fuse (M14) • Ignite Shock Tube • M81 has a stronger cap • than M60, heavier case, • and 2 plugs
M81 PACKAGING • 5 Per Fiber Board box • 60 Boxes Per Crate • Crate Total - 300 Igniters
SPLICING MATERIAL • PACKING: • 5 Ea Per Plastic Bag • 1 Bag Per Spool of M12 or M13 • USES: • To repair a Damaged Section of Shock Tube • To increase standoff
Enabling Learning Objective 1 ACTION: PRIME EXPLOSIVES USING MODERNIZED DEMOLITION INITIATORS (MDI) 051-193-1103* CONDITIONS: You are given quarter-pound blocks of TNT, a priming adapter, string, a sandbag, M2 crimpers, and a section of Mll branch line. Some iterations should be performed in MOPP 4. STANDARDS: You will prime the TNT with MDI-with and without the priming adapter so that the blasting cap remains in the cap well and is not damaged or handled in a way that could cause detonation of the explosive while priming. * Reference TC 5-150 Engineer Qualification Tables
Enabling Learning Objective 2 ACTION: CONSTRUCT A NONELECTRIC INITIATING ASSEMBLY WITH MODERNIZED DEMOLITION INITIATORS (MDI) 051-193-1055* CONDITIONS: You have been given detonating cord, an Mll branch line, an M12 transmission line, an M81 fuse igniter, an M14 time-delay fuse, an M9 holder, J-hooks, adhesive tape, a sandbag, and M2 crimpers. Some iterations should be performed in mission-oriented protective posture (MOPP) 4. STANDARDS: You will construct a nonelectric initiating assembly-using MDI correctly and in sequence. You will attach the assembly to a detonating-cord firing system so that, when initiated, it will detonate as if it were live. * Reference TC 5-150 Engineer Qualification Tables
Enabling Learning Objective 3 ACTION: CONSTRUCT A DUAL-FIRING SYSTEM WITH MODERNIZED DEMOLITION INITIATORS (MDI) 051-193-1202* CONDITIONS: You are given detonating cord, an Mll branch line, an M12 transmission line, an M14 time-delay fuse, priming adapters, M9 holders, M81 fuse igniters, quarter-pound blocks of TNT, M2 crimpers, a sandbag, and adhesive tape. Some iterations should be performed in MOPP 4. STANDARDS: You will dual prime each charge using a combination of both MDI and detonating cord. You will correctly tie the charges into a combination firing system (also consisting of MDI and detonating cord) so the charges will detonate. * Reference TC 5-150 Engineer Qualification Tables
SUMMARY • MDI Components • Constructing a Nonelectric Initiating Assembly • Constructing a Dual-firing System • Priming Explosives
