Contents • ISS physics group • From ISS to IDS • IDS Physics and Performance Evaluation Group (PPEG) main objectives • Summary NuFact 07 - PPEG
The ISS physics WG • Mandate: The Physics working group focused on “establishing the physics case for the various facilities and in finding the optimum parameters of the accelerator facility and detector systems from the physics point of view”. • Convener: Y. NagashimaDeputy: K. Long • Subgroups: Theoretical - S. King Phenomenological - O. Yasuda Experimental - K. Long Muon Physics - L. Roberts • Almost finished report draft with results available athttp://www.hep.ph.ic.ac.uk/iss/wg1-phys-phen/index.html NuFact 07 - PPEG
ISS physics subgroups Theory • Identify the big questions in neutrino physics which are at the basis of the physics case for a very sensitive neutrino facility: • Origin of neutrino masses • Role of neutrinos in the early Universe • Information from neutrinos about unification of forces and matter • … • Search for clues of new physics in neutrino facilities alone, and in combination with otherexperiments • Detailed comparison of the performance of the various facilities • Review of muon physics that can be studied with the high intensity muon beam available at a neutrino factory Phenomenology Experimental Muon physics NuFact 07 - PPEG
ISS performance comparison results • The physics performance for q13, MH, CPV was compared using the GLoBES softwarehttp://www.mpi-hd.mpg.de/lin/globes/ Optimized setup Conservative setup NuFact 07 - PPEG
IDS Physics and Performance Evaluation Group (PPEG) • … will continue the activities of the ISS physics working group. • At least in the first phase, the study will be focused on the performance of the various neutrino facilities. At a later stage, the focus will be shifted towards the physics case for a neutrino factory. • Executive committee: Andrea Donini, Patrick Huber, Silvia Pascoli, Walter Winter, … • Tasks: • Coordinate physics performance study • Website • Interface with accelerator and detector WG • (possibly) Workshops • Report NuFact 07 - PPEG

Why need another physics WG? • Baseline design has to be fixed, in particular,in discussion with detector WG • Evaluation of new ideas, especially for large q13,such as NF+SB, NF-SB, off-axis NF, etc. • Comparison to alternatives: beta beams etc. • Define requirements for non-standard physics measurements, e.g., silver channel, etc. • Include requirements for muon physics and how these interact with the oscillation program • … Physics performanceevaluation (initial phase) NuFact 07 - PPEG
Physics performance evaluation • The main purpose of the PPEG is to evaluate the physics performance of a given experimental setup (neutrino factory or other, existing or planned) in a transparent, consistent and documented fashion. • Transparent: Clearly state • Definition of performance indicator • Approximations used • Chosen input parameters, luminosity etc. • Confidence level • Treatment of systematics • Consistent: Assumptions should be on equal footing • Documented: Relevant information will be archived and will be accessible. Use of a website. NuFact 07 - PPEG
Definition of parameters • Neutrino factory setups: all the parameters will be defined in strict collaboration with the detector and accelerator WG of the IDS • Need of a defined and efficient communication between the various WGs • There will be different types of setups: • Baseline setup: stable, agreed design • Conservative modification of 1. – e.g. different baseline etc. • Speculative ideas, e.g. new ideas • Beta beam setups: possibly follow the same procedure as for neutrino factory, working in collaboration with beta-beam groups • Super-beam setups: use of existing literature and input of well-established and recognised experts NuFact 07 - PPEG
PPEG key ingredients • Main purpose: Performance evaluation • Follow the method used in the ISS report. • GLoBES will be used. • Issue: CPU time which will be needed. • Performance updates twice a year and presented at NuFact. NuFact 07 - PPEG
Europe: The FP07 proposal • Europe turned in funding proposal for a high-energy neutrino oscillation facility design study within FP07; currently under evaluation • Close connection between PPEG and work package 6: Physics reach and comparison • Coordinator: Pilar Hernandez, Deputy: Andrea Donini Link to IDS PPEG • Institutions involved in WP 6: CSIC, CERN, University of Durham, INFN, MPG NuFact 07 - PPEG
PPEG Website • The PPEG has already setup a website:http://www.ippp.dur.ac.uk/ids/ • It will serve: • To illustrate the mandate, structure and activities of the PPEG • To host the results of the performance evaluations • To link to the documentation relative to the performance evaluation • To inform about the activities with announcements and with links to the workshops, the reports and any other relevant activity NuFact 07 - PPEG
