  3. “After-school” can mean… Any time students are not spending in school: • Before school starts • After school is out • Saturday • Evenings • Vacations • Summer

  4. What after-school is NOT • More of the school day • Unplanned and poorly supervised • Busy work • Baby-sitting • “A free for all” • Skill drills • A punishment for • Missing assignments • Negative behavior

  5. What SHOULD after-school look and feel like? • Well organized • Accessible • Youth Centered • High Expectations for Youth and Staff • Safe • Supportive • Interactive • Engaging

  6. What SHOULD after-school look and feel like? • Well planned • Intentional/goal driven • Age appropriate • Aligned with the school-day • Healthy offerings • FUN!!!!!

  7. How do we do that? • Set goals • Plan, plan, plan • Survey • Communicate • Collaborate • Evaluate • Plan some more!!!!

  8. Goals/Outcomes/Philosophy • Reflect desired outcomes • Are youth-centered • Guide program policies • Must be shared with staff, families and community • Must be measurable • Need to be evaluated and revised regularly

  9. Plan/Survey/Communicate • Start with the youth • Start with the parents • Start with the community • Start with the data • Start with the staff • End with the youth

  10. Collaborate • Partner with other school programs • Partner with community agencies • Partner with business • Partner with city/county/state

  11. Evaluate • Focus on quality • Use research based standards and tools • Make it part of a continuous improvement process
