Falconry Falconry is the ancient practice of hunting with birds of prey. Falconry was invented by the Arabs.
Becoming a Falconer To become a falconer you have to study for a federal falconry exam. Some states require an extra test. You then have to get a state hunting license because falconers hunt with the birds. Next you need to get a licensed falconer who will sponsor you during your training. Your sponsor must approve your progress through the process. You must also buy equipment to make your mews, or birdhouse. You need to buy a leash, outdoor perch, swivel, scale, bath pan, and jesses. Cont.
Continued Next, you must submit your application to the Fish and Game warden with your sponsor’s signature. You can’t apply until your mews and equipment are ready for inspection. Get a game warden to inspect your equipment. Once you are approved, you earn your license. Finally, you must trap your falcon in the appropriate season. You begin as an apprentice falconer.
Training Your Birds Falconers must train their birds to fly freely, return to a human, and accept that they will be returned to captivity. The falconer must also learn about the gaming birds, their stages of life, characteristics, prey, care, feeding, and suitability. You also must know how to recognize health problems, learn about proper housing, and know how to use all of the equipment. There is a lot to learn!! Cont.
Continued You should keep the falcon in your house with you during it’s first few weeks. Teach the falcon to hop or fly to the glove on your hand. As soon as it eats on the glove, introduce it to the lure (food). When it flies to the lure, let it catch it quickly sometimes. That way it will always try hard and think that it has a chance of catching the prey. Make sure the falcon is well trained before you go hunting.
Heinz Meng Heinz Meng is a falconer mentioned in the book, Frightful’s Mountain, written by Jean Craighead George. His Peregrine falcons and hawks have been seen on TV, in operas and movies such as “The Love Spell”. He received the first falconry license issued in New York State in 1977. He was also the first falconer to breed Peregrines in captivity. He is currently working at New Paltz State University of New York as a biology professor. He is researching accipiters, which he says are instrumental in gaining national protection for the birds.
