What is Psychology? • The scientific study of people • The scientific study of affect, behavior, cognition, and physiology/biology.
Who are Psychologists? • The field of psychology is split in halves: Professional Practice versus Research and Teaching Abnormal(affect, behavior, cognition, physiology/biology) versus Normal(affect, behavior, cognition, physiology/biology)
Seven Themes • Psychology as a field of study: 1. Empirical 2. Theoretically diverse • Evolves in sociohistorical context • Study of People: 4. Determined by multiple causes 5. Shaped by cultural heritage • Influenced jointly by heredity and environment • How to approach psychology: 7. People’s experience of the world is highly subjective.
