Symbolism: The Importance of women in and out of the household during the 1940’sand World War II.
How does this “Iron” tie to me? • My great-grandmother’s-passed along in the family • The symbolism and significance of this items ties to my womanhood and the struggle of the women before me • History of women
Significance in the Home • Perform household duties such as cleaning, cooking, sewing, and ironing • During WWII, women at home assisted with the community efforts such as day care centers and war bonds. • Housewives found themselves working harder to meet family needs • Victory Gardens
Significance Outside of the Home • Because of WWII, jobs for women opened up • Left their old jobs and became welders, riveters, assemblers, and inspectors • Women in the war were mostly assigned as nurses or clerical workers
Government and media launched campaign to get women active in the war effort by getting a job • By the end of WWII, approximately 6 million women entered the labor force for the first time “Do your part, free a man for service.”
The Struggle • No-time off and work holidays • Less pay for the same job • Discriminatory actions and looks “The happiest day of my life will be when I say goodbye to each one of you women as I usher you out the door” “You won’t learn it, women can’t do that job”
“Rosie the Riveter” How many people have seen this picture? • Demonstrated: stamina, strength, coordination,, mechanical and technological knowledge
Conclusion My artifact symbolizes the crucial roles and strength of women during the war effort, in the household, and presently today.
