Review/Warmup: Refer back to LG 1 in your ISN • Essential Question #1: • Historically, what are the 2 features that have influenced the size and distribution of settlements? • Human Features • Physical Features • Give Examples of Each: • Human- Infrastructure (such as??), economic & political systems and services (such as??) • Physical-agriculture/food, favorable climate, access to water

Essential Question #2: What are the processes that have caused changes to settlement patterns? • Availability of resources • Water and natural resources • Transportation • Railroads (Trans-Continental, Trans-Siberian, Amtrak)- movement of resources • Streets-Growth of suburbia • For suburbs to grow-What are some things that had to happen 1st? • Economic Activities • People move to areas with economic opportunities • 49 Gold Rush, Midland-Odessa, Central Texas (Austin), India, Amazonian Rainforest, Eastern Europe to Western Europe • Urbanization • Movement of people from rural to urban areas • What pushes people to migrate from rural to urban areas? • What pushes countries to move from being a less developed country to a more developed country?

Economic Activities • Primary (What is the level of development )? • Reliance of raw materials/natural resources • Such as: Agriculture, Forestry, Mining, Fishing • Secondary (What is the level of development )? • Movement to Industry • Raw Materials to Manufactured Goods • Tertiary (What is the level of development )? • Service Industry • Law, Retail, Restaurant, Police, Medical, Finance • Quaternary (What is the level of development )? • Information Processing • Education, Research, Government, Libraries, IT

Essential Question #3: How do push-pull factors & Physical Geography affect migration? • LG 2 Activity • Use your assigned student # to find your city assignment. • Find online maps which fit each category on the instructions sheet. • Social, Political, Economic, Environmental • Create 4 maps which address each category. Follow instruction sheet carefully. • Lastly, research your city’s history carefully. • Locate 3 events or factors which either pushed or pulled population from/to your city and why.
