  3. April 1914: The World at War • Central Powers • Germany • Austria-Hungary • Ottoman Empire • Allied Powers • Britain • France • Russia • United States • Led by Woodrow Wilson • Neutral/Isolationist • April 1917 joins war on the side of the Allied Powers

  4. Why did the U.S. enter WWI? • Unrestricted Submarine Warfare • Sinking of the Lusitania • Zimmerman Telegram • German/Mexican Alliance • Economic ties with Great Britain

  6. Mobilizing America for War • Preparation for war resisted by Wilson • “If you want WAR, vote for Hughes. If you want PEACE with honor, vote for Wilson.” • Preparedness Movement • Led by Theodore Roosevelt in 1915 • Alarmed that U.S. not ready • Wilson gives in  agrees to double army and navy

  7. Selective Service Act • Selective Service Act: also called a draft or conscription • All men ages 21-30 must register for military service • Allows U.S. to quickly create a large army

Transforming the Economy for War • WWI leads to Big Government • New programs and agencies to help run the war • Liberty Bonds • People encouraged to buy “bonds” to fund the war • National War Labor Board • Prevents strikes in wartime • U.S. Food Administration • “Food will win the war” • Meatless Mondays and Wheatless Wednesdays to conserve
