  2. Agency Located at 1427 S. HWY 69, Nederland TX 77627 Member of a franchise (Tiger Rock TaeKwonDo) Established in 1984 Specialized in teaching self defense and developing character.

  3. Goal: To develop and implement a program to improve the overall dental health and knowledge of Mid-Country TaeKwonDo. Objectives • To increase the basic dental knowledge by 50%. • Increase the utilization of oral protective equipment to 100% • To have a Save-A-Tooth kit on site in case of emergencies. • To reduce the plaque score by 15%. • To implement an age limit on the purchase of sugary drinks.

  4. Supporting Facts • A study conducted by the Texas Department of Health Services 73.3% of Texans have either had previous caries or current decay. • According to Clinical Key’s website almost all young children will have gingivitis. • According to the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey only 35% of the population have well-aligned incisors. • The American Cancer Society says about 37,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. • An article for ADA states that only 30 to 74% of children utilize dental care. Rates were higher among children with Medicaid. • The Port Arthur Health Department gave dental vouchers for people who could not afford to have dental work in the past, but no longer supports that program. • According to Water Systems Details website the water fluoridation for Port Arthur is .8 ppm.

  5. Target Group Age: 4 to 16 70% Caucasian, 15% Asian, and 15% African American 70% female and 30% male. Majority consisted of low income individuals from Nederland

  6. Protect Our Teeth Rationale We chose this site because we know the importance of wearing mouth guards for contact sports. We understood the importance of teaching children early enough to start on good habits so they will be less likely to have dental concerns later in life. Activities The program was aimed at educating the students of Mid-County TaeKwonDo on basic oral hygiene and the importance of using protective mouth guards.

  7. How it was conducted. • 4 Sessions • 1. Pre-tests, Plaque, Brushing, and Caries Process • 2. Mouth Guards, flossing and Gingivitis. • 3. Post-tests, Fluoride, and sealants. • 4. Modify the sites policies. • Each Session lasted an average of45 minutes. • 1 time a week for 4 weeks. • We broke up the kids in 3 different groups to help tailor the lessons to their age level.

  8. Evaluations Week 3 Post-Tests Mean : 83% Percentage Change: 54% Plaque Score Mean 1.0 Percentage Change: 40% Week 1 • Pre-test • Mean: 54% • Plaque Score • Mean: 1.7

  9. Evaluations (cont.) • We believe that the program was a great success. The site did change their policies to mandate mouth guards to be utilized by participants during contact training. • The children involvedexceededthe improvement that we were hoping for. • There has not been a program like ours that we are aware of to compare ours to.

  10. Had a Blast! The strength of this program was the size of the groups; with the smaller group size we were able to have a more one on one approach in meeting the needs of the participants. The weakness of the program was the attention span of the children. Recommendations for the program would have been more advertisement and changing to a later time. We were competing with church activities and being at 4:00 when children just got out of school made it difficult for the parents to get the students there.
