  15. Be Assertive Aggressive – people don’t listen Passive – people won’t hear you Assertive - people will listen and hear what you say Assertive communication works for self advocacy Assertive communication is used by good workers

  16. What have you learned? You learned to communicate by sharing your needs and wants, ideas and feelings, your body language, what you say and how you say it. Assertive communication is the best way to communicate. Listeningto others is just as important as talking.

  17. Assertive How does being assertive help you be a better leader? • Being assertive can help you tell people what you need and why. • Leaders need to be able to tell others what the group needs and why.

  18. Be in Charge of Your Life! • Do you have something to say? Do you want to be heard ? • You are the expert, tell others what is important to you! • If being heard is important to you, now is your chance to get trained to speak up!. You are the “Captain” of your own ship! Don’t let anyone else take the wheel. Use your skills to get everyone on board with the life you want.

THINK ABOUT – TALK ABOUT • Examples of Problem Situations: • Asking others for information or help • Saying no to requests that you disagree with • Accepting help and feedback • Handling disagreements • Meeting new people • Dealing with behavior of others • I get bullied by others • People don’t listen to what I say

  23. Think About – Talk About • You can learn steps to help you solve problems more easily. • Everyone has a problem at one time or another. • It is important to know and name your feelings about a problem, then you can use 5 steps to help you choose what you want to do.

  24. 5 Steps to solve a problem Step 1: Relax and take a deep breath Step 2: Say something positive to self Step 3: Say what the problem is Step 4: Think of solutions Step 5: Pick one thing and… just do it!

  26. Problems like: Sometimes you will need to ask others for information or to help you… • Meet new people • Say “no” to someone • Deal with …. • someone who tells you what you like or want • someone who does not agree with you • someone who is rude to you • Drama by other people

  27. 5 Problem Solving Steps How do the 5problem solving steps help you become a better leader? Problem solving helps you Know how you feel. Take time to think. Decide what is best for you AND the group.

We need skills to…. • Be in control of what happens to us so that others do not make decisions for us. • Avoid harmful results of bad decisions • Get what you want and need, even if there are barriers • Make and keep friendships • Know what to do with difficult situations.

  30. THINK ABOUT – TALK ABOUT • If you practice problem solving, you will be more prepared the next time you have a problem. • You can take action! • You can work together as a team to solve problems • Talk with others on your team and share ideas about dealing with a problem.

  35. Negotiating Tips • Face the other person • Make eye contact • Use a calm voice tone • Wear a happy face • Use listening skills • Ask for what you want

  36. Negotiating Steps • Say why you want it • If the person agrees, say “Thank you!” • If the person does not agree, suggest an idea • If the person agrees, say “Thank you!”

  37. Negotiating Steps • If the person does not agree, you both can think of ideas. • If you need more time to think? Ask for it. • Talk again later. • If the person agrees, say “Thank you!”

  43. Power Together, Power Alone An important part of being a self-advocate and a leader is: • Knowing when to ask for help from one or more people.

  44. Power Together, Power Alone • Problem situation #1: • You’re volunteering at a food pantry and need to move heavy boxes from one area to another. • Questions: • Can you move it alone without hurting yourself? • Would it be easier to ask for help?

  45. Power Together, Power Alone • Problem situation #2: • You are bagging groceries at Kroger. Your co-worker, who is the cashier, is being rude to you in front of customers. • Questions: • Do you need help to find out why this keeps happening? • What do you do when she says mean things to you?

  46. Power Together, Power Alone Working together with others helps you be a better self advocate and leader . • Know when to ask for help: • everyone does what they do best • everyone can say what they think • everyone can share their ideas. This makes the group stronger. Together WE ARE Better!

  48. ACTIVITY: Power Together, Power Alone YOUR GROUP WILL: • Pick someone to take the challenge. • Read the challenge with the group. • Choose your option: • Handle it alone • Ask for help from one person • Ask for help from more than oneperson Each group will have 2 challenges.

  49. Demonstration of Activity Your challenge is a cashier is rude to a customer at Kroger. How would you handle the situation? Would you handle it alone? Ask for help from one person? Or ask for help from more than one person? What would you do? I would ask for help from more than one person. Why? So I can have a witness and others could help support me and we can problem solve together.
