School Library System Mission Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES School Library System is a consortium of professionals and staff who provide vision, leadership, and service to the educational community. We continue to focus on excellence in providing access to information, sharing resources and developing life-long learners.

History of School Library Systems 1948: 22 Public Library Systems established. 1968: 3R’s Councils -academic, special libraries. 1979-84: 12 School Library System pilots • 1984: SLSs created per NYS Ed. Law &Commissioner’s Regulations • 1986-87: $5.1 million provided for 46 SLSs. • New York State • 1st to support a network of school libraries.

Communication Coordinator As part of an agreement to participate in the Onondaga Cortland Madison BOCES School Library System, the district superintendent appoints a certified school library media specialist to represent the district at five Communication Coordinator meetings throughout the year.

Administrator/Advocate of the Year Award • The OCM School Library System’s intention is to honor an individual in the OCM region who has made significant contributions to school librarianship. • The award will be given to an individual in an educational setting in the OCM School Library System region that has demonstrated innovative initiatives in the area of school libraries and librarianship.
