Objectives • To consider the responsibility of the Science Co-ordinator in terms of progression • To consider opportunities for progression within each strand of Sc4 using the QCA SoW for Science as a model • To consider assessment opportunities
Issues • It is the responsibility of the co-ordinator to ensure coverage and progression through each Key Stage • When using the QCA SoW progression in some topic areas is not straightforward and sometimes year groups miss out altogether • Assessment should be an integral part of the scheme of work in order for the pupils to receive an appropriate learning experience
Assessment • Records of pupil attainment should be kept by each teacher and passed on as the children move up • Assessment for Learning strategies as well as assessment of learning should be an integral part of school assessment • Sc1 skills should be taught as an ongoing process and assessed independently – not just ‘whole’ investigations
Teaching enquiry skills • Emphasis is on the ‘teaching’ of skills within QCA units • An assessment point should only include those elements that have been specifically taught • Records of pupil attainment for each element should be kept – this will help inform future emphasis and planning • Certain topic areas lend themselves to specific areas of emphasis – some flexibility to change this providing there is an overall balance
