Modifying Nouns and Pronouns When adjectives modify nouns, they usually come directly before the nouns. Occasionally, they may come after. When adjectives modify pronouns, they usually come after a linking verb. Occasionally, they may come before. BEFORE: She saw a bright, smilingface. AFTER: The room, narrow and dark, frightened us. BEFORE: They are happy and talkative. AFTER: Quiet and sullen, he sat in a corner.
PRACTICE!!Underline the adjective and draw an arrow to the noun or pronoun it modifies. Ducks, geese, and swans are aquatic birds. All waterfowl swim and float. These birds have webbed feet.
