Session focus • Provide an overview of the role and contribution of Train to Gain HE in the North East • Highlight the key activities of Train to Gain HE, particularly in relation to employer engagement • Explore how different mechanisms and levers can more effectively support employer engagement activities

Region’s outcomes for Train to Gain HE • Increased (regional) employer engagement in higher level skills development • Workforce development at a higher level is seen as strategically important both by HE institutions and the region • The HE sector is well integrated into the regional skills infrastructure • The HE system will have achieved a step change towards delivering more responsive, flexible provision

Regional skills infrastructure integration • Triangulation of HEFCE funded regional initiatives • Aimhigher, fdf, NEHSN and Train to Gain HE • Skills North East (RSP) • HE/FE/HEFCE representation on Regional Skills Partnership • New HE Steering Group provides: • Advice on issues relating to HE • A sounding board on issues of integration • One NorthEast • Key sectors approach to the development of HE for the NE workforce • Process managed by Unis4ne with partners including FE
Employer gateways to higher education • Business Link North East • Region wide, independent business brokerage service • Operates the Train to Gain skills brokerage • Business diagnostic process refers to all providers • Regional HE skills gateway (Unis4ne) • Strategic business/sector development • For brokers, employers and their representative bodies, SSCs, TUs, other intermediaries and regional agencies • Additional HEFCE resource for non-partner FECs
Employer gateways to higher education (cont.) • HEI/FEC skills gateways • Employer enquiry handling • Academic expertise identification/liaison • Business development/market building • Channel for responsive ‘solution’ development
Programme development funding • Funding for Level 4+ earmarked for each HE partner institution (£850k total) • FECs eligible, accessed through partnership/franchise arrangements • Additional £500k from RDA for development of responsive, accredited/non-accredited, short course provision
HE staff development • Programme under development • For skills business gateway, academic and other support staff • Wider staff development programme co-ordinated by HE Academy • Involves the region’s institutions (e.g. in PVC Special Interest Group, practitioner network) • Benefit to HE and HE in FE providers primarily
Broker development • National broker training programme designed by Centre for Enterprise (LSC funded) • HE module under development • Promote business benefits of higher level skills • Aware of HE offer • Broker appropriate provision • Understand progression routes • Pilot HE module in NE region
