Ladder Safety On average, 220,000 people in America make a trip to the emergency room because of a ladder related incident. • Ensure that the ladder feet are secure every time you position a ladder. • Always use a ladder that is long enough for the task at hand. A great number of ladder accidents are the result of using a ladder that is too short. • Don't carry equipment while climbing a ladder. Invest in a tool belt or have someone hand the equipment to you. • Face the ladder when climbing up and down; keep your body centered between both side rails. • While up on the ladder, don't overextend your reach. Make sure you keep your weight evenly distributed. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

Lawnmowers 57,000 people in the U.S. are treated annually in emergency rooms for injuries resulting from lawn mower use • Always wear substantial shoes when you mow • Don’t mow wet grass--you may slip & lose control of the mower • Beware of hot surfaces around the engine--especially when fueling or restarting the mower • Fuel the mower in a well ventilated area • Be alert to your surroundings--objects in your path, children, etc. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

  8. Never use any flammable liquid other than barbecue starter fluid to start a charcoal barbecue. Never add lighter fluid to the coals after they have ignited. Never burn charcoal inside of home, vehicles, tents or campers. (carbon monoxide) Always check the coals to be sure they are completely out before storing, cleaning or disposing. Give your grill a spring cleaning--clear deposits & ensure that the burners are in good condition; replace if needed Always check for leaks when connecting a fuel tank; make a ‘snoop’ solution with dish soap Maintain the electric igniter. Replacements are cheap, easy to install & safer than alternatives Never light with the lid down.   9. Start out with daily, short workout sessions; back off when you’re sore, increase effort as you improve Pace yourself on a project. If you’re turning over your victory garden, shovel for 15 min per night rather than 4 hours on a Saturday. Work/Play Acclimation Muscles and tendons lose strength when they’re not used. Bear this in mind as you dig into your garden or break out the basketball this Spring. Condition yourself Listen to your Body Have the discipline to stop when you begin to fatigue. Treasurer’s Report • Scholarships • Encourage to apply • UD membership • NSBE, Jr. membership • Assist with completing applications • Company Solicitations • Target different companies than collegiate chapter • Companies at which AE membership is employed if not already a NSBE BCA Company • Fundraising • Membership Dues • Profits from sponsored/co-sponsored events • Social • Professional • Talk to local businesses about certain days where NSBE-AE can collect a portion of their profits • Mentoring and receive a donation to NSBE-AE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS

Committee Strategic plan • Set goal(s) for committee • Include timeline for achieving goal • Might need everyone to be part of committee until a chair and members for committee are assigned • Monthly progress report on committee • Identify which committees should have higher priority and hence immediate attention • 1) Membership, 2) PCI/Collegiate relations, 3) Personal & Professional development, 4) Community Outreach, etc. NATIONAL SOCIETY OF BLACK ENGINEERS
