Something to think about… • 30% of 7th and 8th graders may feel unsafe because of bullying, and harassment • 29% of 7th and 8th graders may have been made fun due to the way they look or talk • 36% of 7th graders may have had mean rumors or lies spread about them California Department of Education- 2007
Why do kids bully (hurt) each other? • Because I see others doing it. • Because it's what you do if you want to hang out with the right crowd. • Because it makes me feel, stronger, smarter, or better than the person I'm bullying. • Because it's one of the best ways to keep others from bullying me.
Bullying • What are examples? • Where does it happen? • When does it happen? • Who does it happen between?
How Can it Affect People? • It may cause people to feel unsafe. • It might cause sadness and loneliness. • It could cause people to react with violence.
What are the negative roles we take on? 1. Bullies do their bullying in the shadows. 2. The student being bullied might be scared to tell anyone (or may have tried to no avail). 3. Others who see the bullying don’t know what to do. They are the bystanders. The good news? Bystanders aren’t unkind. They are unsure.
A note about cyberbullying… Cyber bullying includes, but is not limited to, the following misuses of technology: harassing, teasing, intimidating, threatening, or terrorizing another student or staff member by way of any technological tool, such as sending or posting an inappropriate or derogatory email message, telephone message, instant message, text message, digital picture or image, or website posting (including an individual or collective blog).
I.U.S.D. School Board says… • All forms of bullying and cyber bullying by school district students are hereby prohibited. Anyone who engages in bullying and cyber bullying in violation of this policy shall be subject to appropriate discipline. • Students who have been bullied or cyber bullied shall promptly report such incidents to any staff member. • Complaints of bullying and cyber bullying shall be investigated promptly, and corrective action shall be taken when a complaint is verified. Neither reprisals nor retaliation shall occur as a result of the submission of a complaint. • The District shall annually inform students that bullying and cyber bullying of students will not be tolerated.
Each individual makes a difference! • Refuse to pass along cyberbullying messages • Tell friends to stop cyberbullying • Block communication with cyberbullies • Report cyberbullying to a trusted adult • Join your friends in not participating • Counselors • Parents
The nails in the wood • Can you really take it back? • Were you just kidding? • Was everyone laughing? • What hurt did you leave? Be the change you want to see…
What do I do? If I experience cyberbullying • Block communication with the cyberbully. • Delete messages without reading them. • Talk to a friend or adult about the bullying. • Report the problem to an adult at school, police or internet service provider. To be cyber safe • Never post or share your personal information online (this includes your full name, address, telephone number, school name, parents’ names, credit card number, or Social Security number) or your friends’ personal information. • Never share your Internet passwords with anyone, except your parents. • Never meet anyone face-to-face whom you only know online. • Talk to your parents about what you do online.
