  2. Data collection • The tag reader in the parking meter scans the ID stores in the memory • Parking meter is also equipped with GPS receiver that will give information about the location of the meter and the time

  3. GPS Receiver • A device that receives positional data from satellites and computes its own location based on the distance that the GPS receiver is located away from the satellites. • It will convert this position into a latitude and longitude

  4. What to do with the data? • Data need to be processed further. Before that data need to be transferred to computer host • Data need to be transferred continually. • Want to use wireless network to transmit data

  5. Information flows • Using GPRS to transfer the data through a mobile network • The receiver is connected to a device that is low cost, can transmit the data at a reasonable time interval. It must be able to communicate with a GPRS modem • The device is essentially a serial link between the GPS device and the remote computer where the data sent.

  6. GPRS (General Radio Packet Service) • It offers higher capacity, internet based content, and packet based data services. • It has maximum speed of 171.2 kbps, since data is transmitted quickly then it’s less costly • Immediacy: no dial up connection is necessary

  7. GPRS (continued) • Requirement: • A mobile phone or terminal that supports GPRS • Subscription to a mobile network that supports GPRS • A destination to receive or send information, most likely internet address

  8. Information flow (continued) • Once the data received by the servers then it will be processed further • Data will be read and processed such that it will be accessible through the internet. • Next step would be application.
