2.11 Costs Reparations 14 Points League of Nations Treaty of Versailles • Over 8.5 million dead, US lost 116,000 AEF (American Expeditionary Force) soldiers – US soldiers fought alone • Over $200 billion spent, countries deep in debt, people starving, losing countries no money to rebuild • “Big Four” (US, GB, I, F) made G pay war bills of winning countries, called “reparations” (to repay) • Sought to end causes of modern war, 14 proposals to prevent it • International assembly of world reps that would work together to solve problems peacefully, huge alliance • Wanted to keep Germany from becoming world power again • Idea hated by many in US Senate who feared it would drag US into another war Henry Cabot Lodge, Senopposed to it • Made Germany pay reparations, Germany lost land rich in natural resources, ultimately rejected by US Senate • Country whose idea it was not a member of the LON • Germany blamed for the war, punished severely w/reparations.
