Team Question • "How can we design “PROBLEM / PROJECT / PASSION- based” professional learning to engage our teachers for 21st century learners?"
How can we answer this for OUR school? ..and maybe YOUR school!
Designing PBL PD forLancaster Mennonite School • Agreed upon “Critical Elements”: PBL model, authentic, collaborative, problem-solving, formative assessment, use of web 2.0 tools as a path to get there, sustainability, planning for long-term success, and summative assessment.
Surveying the landscape • Wide range of ability and interest in technology among our teachers • Most teachers use basic technology: Smart Boards, PowerPoint, Google Docs • Minority using Web 2.0 tools • Student creation often just PowerPoint and researching Internet for answers to teacher questions • If any are using PBL, they are not using much technology with it. but..!
…We ARE moving forward! • Growing number of teachers using student collaboration and creation involving emerging technologies and Web 2.0 tools: wikis, podcasts, video, Prezi, Skype,..! • Technology workshops now embedded in scheduled PD days! • We have TWO “PLP Year 1” Teams!! • Administration has strong goal to move forward in technology! • Continuing to update & increase our technology!
Objectives • To build an ever-growing community of practice within our district to help increase the use of PBL among our teachers through regular staff development sessions, and self-directed learning, sharing and support for each other.
Implementation Plan • What is PBL? • Offer PBL as a workshop to introduce it to interested teachers, who agree to be a TEAM. • This will be their yearly professional goal. • August District Technology Workshop • Share Ideas • Meet with TEAM to share ideas for implementing in individual classes. Some teachers may choose to do the same activity or work together. • October District technology Workshop
Checking In and Supporting • How is it going? • Tech Coordinator will check in with each teacher throughout the weeks to see how the PBL is working. Helpful sites linked to district wiki. • TEAM encouraged to share successes, offer support, ask questions through a Ning. • Ongoing • Share the excitement! • Meet with TEAM to check everyone’s progress and share successes / challenges. • Nov, Dec, Jan
Assessment • Celebrate the experience! • Share results / successes / challenges. • Did you meet your goals? • Was there an increase in learning? • Were there any unexpected positive outcomes? • What should you have done differently? • How might you take it a step further? • March district collaborative meeting • What’s next??!!
Spreading the Word • Share the TEAM’s experiences and projects with the district and community through the school website, campus E-links to parents, weekly Infolink newsletter to teachers, and district Bridges magazine. • Use the teachers who were involved this year to mentor a group of elementary or middle school teachers at their individual campuses to try PBL the following year, under direction of the principal and tech coordinator.
