  1. Teaching History and Geography and making it FUN!!! ELEM 341

  2. HISTORY Why is it important to teach? • Helps children view human experience in its broader context, understand events from another perspective • Helps connect to today’s events • Consider children’s perception of time • Was originally “for adults” • Understand that history is HARD for some students (like Opie !), so make it personal!!

  3. Teaching History • Avoid covering long periods of time very quickly. • Avoid broad, sweeping statements such as, “Reconstruction was a time of turmoil.” Instead, concentrate on one person’s experiences at a time. Literature is key! • Avoid using outlines as an introductory activity before they know material • Remember that history can not be separated from other components of a time: SPRITE!!S-Social, P-Political, R- Religious, I-Intellectual, T-Technological, and E-Economical influences

  4. History(There is no capital T in truth!) • Obviously deals with the past (it can’t be recreated to study) • Reflects a biased account of what happened • Typically written by victors, not the vanquished • History is interpretation

  5. Strategies for Teaching History • Interview people who lived through historical events- or guest speakers • Use primary sources! Photographs, documents, artifacts, media • Let children “be historians” by conducting similar methodology • Time warp center/Mystery center • Use dramatic activities** (props, puppets)

  6. . . .More strategies for teaching History • Artistic interpretations • Storytelling! (Andy Griffith Show example) • Dressing as characters and assuming roles • Visit to the local cemetery • Coat of arms • Visuals such as flip books • Models and other 3-D objects

  7. Place and space! Major areas: physical and cultural Geography could be boring– just ask Ernest T. Bass ! If you center your discussions on PEOPLE, then it’s FUN!! Geography

  8. 5 Themes of Geography(Activity) • Location(Where is it?) • Place(What is it like? What makes it special? Physical characteristics? Architecture?) • Human/Environmental Interaction(What shapes the landscape? Tell about climate. Interaction with water sources? Cars?) • Movement(Where do people flock? How do they travel? Where are resources located?) • Regions(Divides the world into manageable units. Look at similarities and differences among people.)

  9. Pitfalls to Avoid with Geography • Don’t overemphasize the bizarre and exotic facts of people and lands • Try not to over-generalize about regions- Emphasize diversity, too • Don’t confuse concepts that are unfamiliar to children (climate vs. weather)
