What is driving it? • The consumers love it • 77% of users of Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones are completely or very satisfied with their device • a higher rate of satisfaction than that reported by users of mobile phones without Wi-Fi. • 74 percent of people who have Wi-Fi on their mobile phone use it • 77 percent say they will seek Wi-Fi in their next phone as well. • Users of phones with Wi-Fi say they like their phone twice as much as those who have phones without Wi-Fi. • The manufacturers like it • "The surprising thing in the survey is that Wi-Fi ends up being a growth driver for the smart phone," (Edgar Figueroa, WFA) Data based on ABI survey done in February 2009: 1,000 U.S. mobile phone users between the ages of 18 and 59. What is driving it? • Even the carriers like it ! • Carriers tend to agree that Wi-Fi is complementary to other networks, including 3G and 4G cellular. • As flat rate data plans increase, wireless operators can leverage Wi-Fi capable handsets to • offload data intensive applications (act as an unlicensed femtocell), • reduce licensed spectrum usage, • improve in-building coverage, and • offer new services to new markets • entice new subscribers and reduce turnover (e.g. ATT and T-mobile) • “…it is clear that Wi-Fi offers a competitive advantage for both manufacturers and carriers.
